One step closer to an invisibility cloak

Using 3D photonic crystals of their own design, researchers at the University of Twente’s MESA+ research institute have achieved a world first, revealing the signature of a photonic band gap. This is one of the holy grails of physics. Their study brings the development of an invisibility cloak - as well as more efficient lasers, LEDs and solar cells - a step closer. The results of the study will soon be published in Physical Review B, a leading American scientific journal.

Philips puts 40 million into OLED

Eindhoven - Philips invests 40 million Euros in its Philips Lighting OLED manufacturing facility in Aachen. With this investment Philips wants to respond to rapidly increasing demands for this type of lighting, which is mostly applied in decoration and mood creation. Aachen already has a production facility which was established originally as a pilot plant. The new manufacturing machinery will be, if all goes well, operational next year. The development of OLED’s is done at Philips Lighting in Aachen and Philips Research in Eindhoven. This is done in cooperation with the Holst Centre which is also active in this area. Recently Philips has also opened the Lumiblade creativity lab in Aachen. There designers and manufacturers of luminaires can experiment with this new form of lighting.

NXP puts lamps online

Eindhoven – NXP has introduced a new chip for controlling CFL’s (Compact Fluorescent Lamps) and LED lamps which will connect these light sources to the internet. The Eindhoven based chip maker presents this so called Greenchip at Lightfair, an exhibition on lighting products in Pennsylvania in the US. The company does so together with several partners who incorporate the NXP chip in their lamps and have connected these to a lighting network. The producer TCP making CFL’s and LED lamps will be the first user of this chip.

Philips claims new LED breakthrough

Eindhoven - Philips is the first producer and seller of a new LED lamp which can replace a 75 Watt light bulb. The lamp has an energy consumption of 17 Watts. Philips has for some time been marketing LED lamps that can replace 40 and 60 Watt light bulbs. In April 2008 outgoing ‘Lighting’ top manager Rudy Provoost showed the very first LED bulb. The newest 75 Watt light bulb LED replacement will be in US shops for around 40 to 50 dollars (30 to 35 Euros) as from the 4th quarter of 2011. In Europe this will be the case during the course of 2012.

Ultra-fast optical switch

Scientists of the University of Twente, the FOM institute AMOLF in Amsterdam and the institute for Nano science and Cryogenics (CEA/INAC) in Grenoble have succeeded in making an ultra-fast switch with a microscopic cavity. It switches on and off in a record breaking time of less than 1 picosecond. This is very promising in relation to optical data communications.

Filtered silicon reference cells for solar simulator intensity adjustment

Reference photovoltaic (PV) cells developed in collaboration with Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) utilizing Konica Minolta's advanced optical filter technology to provide high-accuracy measurement for adjusting the intensity of solar simulators used for evaluation of solar cells including tandem cells.
