Photonics in Federal European FP7 R&D Program

We are pleased to announce the release of our new report: "Photonics in Federal European FP7 R&D Program".
Based on Cordis database analysis, we have selected all FP7 projects from 2007 to 2012 that aimed at developing photonic systems and components. We found 374 project but including 75 in the challenge n°3 of the ICT calls. The report demonstrate once more the strongly pervasive nature of Photonics technologies and why it was a good decision to select Photonics as a KET.
Using our value chain tools, we have been able to analysis how European budget are spent:
- per country
- per value chain step (process, material, components, subsystems, systems)
- per function (acquiring information, transmitting and shaping, delivering and storage, lighting, energy providing and processing)
- per targeted markets

The FP7 project PARADIGM launches a second call for free participation in one of its InP-based Multi-Project Wafer runs. Participants can design (or have designed) an advanced Photonic IC. The PICs may contain lasers, optical amplifiers, modulators (10 Gb/s), detectors (40 Gb/s), couplers, filters, AWG demultiplexers and several other components. The call closes 28 February. Quantum Optics Work Wins Physics Nobel

Separate but related quantum optics technologies — ions in a harmonic trap and photons in a cavity — that allow the measurement and control of individual quantum systems were recognized by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences with the 2012 Nobel Prize in physics.

Avantes develops spectrometer for bomb detection

Avantes, a leader in the field of fiber optic spectroscopy, has been selected as supplier for the OPTIX project (Optical Technologies for the Identification of explosives). The objective is to develop a transportable system for the standoff detection and identification of explosives, using LIBS, Raman and IR spectroscopy. Avantes will supply newly developed systems. The project is funded by the European Commission.

The training targets researchers of universities and research institutes, young professionals, employees of photonics-related companies, lawyers, business angels, consultants… and therefore everybody who is involved or interested in entrepreneurship in photonics.
